The 13 villages and communities that make-up Chakfem district have no access to clean drinking water. A few individuals have shallow wells but the vast majority of Chakfem women and children trek daily, sometimes for several kilometers to fetch water from streams for daily use.
Similarly, families and communities have no access to either proper water closet toilets or even the basic Ventilation Improved Pit (VIP) latrines. The net effect of these is that there is a high burden of preventable illnesses and unacceptably high mortality rates in the communities especially among the children.
Our focus at Le Pan Health and Wellness Initiatives is to change this situation, among others through the provision of boreholes for portable water alongside VIP latrines in the communities.
